Mit der L. geht meist auch eine Schwierigkeit des fehlerfreien Schreibens einher (Schreibschwäche).
L. besteht meist bis ins Erwachsenenalter hinein. Bei frühzeitiger Hilfe (z.B. durch Aufmerksamkeitstraining (s. Aufmerksamkeit), systematische Verbesserung des Schreibvermögens, intensives Üben usw.) kann diese Lernstörung nach und nach abgebaut werden.
In der Medizin erklärt man sich die L. mit einer verringerten Leistungsfähigkeit (s. Leistung) der Großhirnrinde (s. Cortexx cerebri, Telencephalon) für die entsprechenden Projektionsfelder (s. Rindenfelder).
In der Psychologie und Pädagogik erklärt man sich die L. als eine schulische Lernstörung, die verschiedene Ursachen haben kann wie z.B. geringe sprachliche Begabung, Konzentrationsschwäche, mangelnde Lernmotivation (s. Motivation), Überforderung des Kindes durch die Eltern, körperliche Entwicklungsverzögerungen usw. (s. Entwicklung). Ein Zusammenhang zwischen L. und Linkshändigkeit konnte nicht festgestellt werden.
