This paper reviews the social needs of the deaf community and describes the mechanisms and/or technologies which would improve the quality of life of this collective. The base of this project is a pilot of teleinterpretation developed in Andalusia (Spain), and as results of the interaction with the users, have been found two investigation lines, the telephone communication, and the e-learning. This activities have a clearly defined technology needs by hearing impaired, and the existing solutions do not fix completely the problem, so they are a good scenario to implement an automatic sing language recognition system. The aim of the paper is demonstrate how to thanks to this technology, social barriers can be torn down, allowing equal access to those services that today are restrictive for the collective of deaf people.
