Summer School 2012

The DGS Corpus team has conducted a summer school on “Sign Language Corpus Linguistics” from 6th to 17th of August 2012. 52 participants from all over the world, deaf and hearing, have experienced two weeks of presentations and hands on training learning about necessary steps in collecting and analysing a corpus of sign language: project development and application, production of elicitation material for data collection, methods and ethical questions for field work, making the data accessible (e.g. via annotation and transcription with glosses and HamNoSys) and data analysis. With the exception of two courses (field work and data analysis) all courses have been prepared and held by members of the DGS Corpus team and supported by student assistants. In addition four guest presentations on other corpus projects and avatar technology were held.

For the participants as well as for us the ten days of the summer school have been at the same time demanding as well as inspiring and wonderful with intense conversations in an altogether pleasant atmosphere.
